TYPES OF COOPERATIVES

 




WORKER COOPERATIVES

Cooperatives which main objective is to produce or transform goods or provide services to third parties, by means of its Associates’ joint work, whose retribution must be defined according to the work provided by each of them.

The contributions of the Associates (physical persons) must consist of labor, regardless of any capital, movable or immovable property they provide.

SERVICE COOPERATIVES

Cooperatives which main objective is to distribute goods and provide services of any kind, preferably to its Associates, with the intention of improving environmental and economic conditions. This is done by satisfying needs, whether they be family, social, occupational or cultural related.

Taking into consideration that the following list is not exhaustive, Service Cooperatives can be of the following sorts: education, provision and distribution of electric power and drinking water, housing, provisioning, savings and credit and also home and community related activities.

ELECTRICAL COOPERATIVES

Cooperatives which objective is to distribute electrical energy to its Associates. On a side note, drinking water provision and distribution Cooperatives are regulated (when applicable) by the same legislation as Electrical ones.

EDUCATION COOPERATIVES

Cooperatives which insert within educational institutions of basic, middle, special or superior levels, with the objective of improving all aspects of such institutions and the community in which they reside. The main objective of these cooperatives is educational, subordinating the economical aspect.

HOUSING COOPERATIVES

Cooperatives which objective is to satisfy the housing and community related needs of its Associates, by providing services aiming towards the mentioned goal.

SAVINGS AND CREDIT COOPERATIVES

A Cooperative will be recognized as a Savings and Credit one, only if its sole purpose is to provide its Associates with financial intermediation services.

AGRICULTURAL COOPERATIVES

Cooperatives dedicated to trading, distribution, goods production and transformation, related to the agriculture, forestry and agroindustrial activity. The objective of these Cooperatives is to boost the sector’s performance, preferably within the rural sphere, striving towards the social, economic and cultural development of its Associates.

Cooperatives dedicated to production, trading, distribution and transformation of goods and services related to sea exploitation, as well as to activities that pursue an improvement on the quality of life for those who work on the mentioned sector.
